Gallery post: some of the stuff I sell

Standard

dec cal pic

Today’s assignment on the  blogging101 course was to try out a different kind of post, and I have been intending  to put together a page that shows the type of stuff I stock, for spinners, weavers, felters, knitter, quilters and other crafters – so, why not use the exercise for this purpose!  This is the first Gallery I have ever put together and its rather random in nature, I could have put them together in categories, but, I haven’t – not this time.  I also intended to link the listings on etsy and ebay to each picture – but not this time. If you want to browse the listings, click on the personal links underneath my photo on the right hand side. If you want to buy direct see this page, if you want more information on anything contact me here!

If you want to buy anything, please do, smile, I  sell worldwide.  To see the captions and find out what the fibres are,  just hover over them.  I think it turns into a slide show if you click on any of the images.

FLASH SALES & CHRISTMAS CARDS ……..

Standard

redteapotAll of a sudden we’re being bombarded with pre Christmas adverts, emails, junk mail etc etc…….and oddly enough, I’m planning to do something too ……..

Well, its like this, I was idly listening to Evan Davis (the new Newsnight presenter – what do you think of him?)  on the Bottom Line (Radio 4) the other week, and he and his panel of business people were talking about Flash Sales.  I couldn’t tell you much about what they actually said, but it sparked a train of thought – and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

I used to be a photographer – I say used to be, because the old ways have been so superseded by digital cameras and mobile phones, that I can no longer earn a living in photography – without doing weddings, which I always refused!

TRECASTLEAt one point I also earned some extra by selling my own photographic greetings cards, which I got printed up to very high standards, and on very good card, with really nice envelopes.  Sadly, the ‘art’ greetings card market also took  a dive, as people don’t bother to send nice little notes on nice cards to each other any more either!

I’m not moaning – just setting the scene.  I now am back selling stuff on ebay, and if it weren’t for digital and broadband, I’d never have the opportunity.

Anyway, I did sell quite a lot of cards, and even had some in galleries and museums, but that was about 15 years ago!

When demand starting drying up, I went to see a local business advisor – he was a lovely man – his business was selling bull semen – smile – and he gave me some very good advice.  He said, sell them all off to a wholesaler for 1p a card! – ie take a big loss and forget about them. I was selling them for around  £2.50 at the time.

lambActually he was right – but I just couldn’t do it – so over the years the boxes of cards have had small incursions into them, but there are still loads left – all stacked up in the store room (my 2nd bedroom) and its got so bad in there that I have just spent ages trying to move stuff to get to them!   There are some I just ain’t gonna reach at the moment – I’m looking for the ones I used to sell and send as Xmas cards.  So altho the whole set may not be available – I thought I’d go ahead with the idea of a Flash Sale on the ones I can find – as soon as I’ve sorted everything out and worked how how many of each I have.  The ones I know I have at present are shown in this meandering blog!

Why am I writing this now – when I haven’t got any firm news to tell you?  Because I felt like a rest from excavating the store room, and because I plan to have things ready within the next week.  At that point I will be sending a NEWS FROM JULZ email to all my customers, giving them an exclusive offer, and I will be selling the cards for less than they cost me to produce – but NOT 1p!  So I thought I’d give you a heads up.

Anyone who has not bought from me, or thinks they have dropped off my mailing list, is welcome to email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com – mentioning this blog, and I’ll add you to the list.

In the meantime I’ve been having fun putting some of my other photos/cards/prints up on my old ebay account – which you can view by clicking on the orange lettering.

I’ve also been adding to my listings on my new ebay account (mainly spinning & weaving stuff) – and to my etsy shop (a more eclectic mix) – click on orange lettering to have a look.

That’s all for now ……will let you know more when I know it!

SHOW & TELL NO 3: SPINNING BY ROSEMARY FROM PRESCOT, MERSEYSIDE

Standard

ROSEMARY not only spins at home, but is part of a Tudor re-enactment group – which I found out about by chance when she sent me a message thro’ ebay, asking for fast delivery, so that she could use them in her display last weekend.

“By the way the amber and carders will be used next weekend when we are doing some spinning etc. demos in Elizabethan dress. I put the amber inside replica pomanders (pomander actually means in French an apple of amber).”

“As promised here I am in two different guises spinning and using your tops. In fact can you see the necklace have on when I am an Elizabethan that’s a pomander and it is full of your amber.”

Thanks very much Rosemary for sending the photos so quickly – the Elizabethan costume looks very comfortable!  Feel free to leave a comment for Rosemary in the comment box (at the end of the blog)

You can find the amber resin she mentions HERE on ebay, or HERE for etsy customers – you can use it as a solid perfume to rub on your wrists, or put it a pomander as Rosemary has. It is a totally natural product and has a warm exotic fragrance.  If you look through my other listings on these sites, you will find merino wool tops for spinning as well as other related items.

SHOW & TELL NO 2: DECORATED KROMSKI FANTASIA SPINNING WHEEL BY CHRISTINE FROM TOTNES DEVON

Standard

SHOW & TELL (Click blue text to go to the original blog)  is open to all my customers who have bought from me at any time over the years. Please send in photos of your work, it can be in any craft or other media, with a brief description, to show (off) to others and hopefully inspire all of us.  If you’re not a customer, and would like to take part, just buy something, however small – from either ebay or etsy .  To my see current stock, please click on the links on the right hand side of this blog.

CHRISTINE, from Totnes, Devon bought a KROMSKI FANTASIA SPINNING WHEEL from me last year, and was inspired by my suggestion, and the picture on the listing, that because of the way the wheel is made, there is a great opportunity to decorate it and make it totally individual.

She sent me these pictures earlier this year, and is happy for them to be part of this SHOW & TELL!

spinning wheel 2   spinning wheel  spinning wheel 3sock yarn

THIS IS HOW SHE ACCOMPLISHED THESE EFFECTS: “I finished the wood parts with danish oil and the MDF wheel was primed with white emulsion, after masking the cross piece with newspaper and masking tape. I then sprayed it with black matt car paint.  The front lettering is  traditional, bygone west country sheep counting language, much like the well known Cumbrian one which goes yan, tan, thether etc. On the back I drew little white leaping sheep, both using Eddings paint marker pens. Finished off with a couple of layers of varnish. I have also included a picture of the first yarn I spun on it, a sock yarn, spun from a hand painted superwash merino blend roving.”

I was really impressed when I saw what she’d done, and was going to put the pictures up at the time – but then I thought I’d lost them, as I hadn’t saved them separately – just as well I went back & checked!

Please do leave any comments for Christine at the end of this blog!

out of the boxThis is what the FANTASIA looks like when it comes out of the box – it doesn’t take too long to put it together, but whist its still in pieces, it makes it easier to decorate the various pieces in any way you want to – its only a suggestion, if you don’t want to bother, this is what it looks like…  fantasia unfinished

If you are interested in buying one yourself, have a look at the US distributers website – http://www.newvoyager.com – where you will find lots of useful information, as well as a picture of another decorated Fantasia.

I am a registered UK agent for all KROMSKI Spinning Wheels and Looms – I currently stock the 24″ Harp Loom, and if you want to order ANY Kromski product, I can get it for you.  For US customers, you will find a list of suppliers on the New Voyager website.

Please email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com for prices and delivery times

I look forward to being able to put up more work from YOU! – Smile….

LUSCIOUS SILKS – SOME NEW ADDITIONS

Standard

I love silk, and you might have noticed that I have got a stock of silks, either as fibres or yarns, and have just added some silk lap to the mix (trying it on ebay first – see links to my pages under the photo)

WHITE SILK LAP  Silk lap is strange stuff, its part fabric and can be used as wadding if you are making something from silk material that will benefit from the use of something quite so expensive – I have a small roll of white silk laps that I am selling as wadding  – but can also be used for felting & spinning.  It will be hand cut from the roll in aprrox 12″ squares.  You can use my landscape dyes to dye it too!

I also have some beautiful pieces that have been dyed in absolutely luscious colours, which I am selling as 5″ squares – no square will be exactly the same, and can be used to make pictures with, added to a felting project, or will make amazing silk yarn if you want to tease out the fibres for spinning. (apologies for the picture layout, I can’t seem to get them where I intend them to be!)

BLUE GREY SILK LAP  GOLD YELLOW SILK LAP

IMG_2231

New stock includes some degummed white silk throwsters waste, which can still be used for paper making, will the addition of a glue, and will also add lovely effects to felting pieces.  The silk noils have always been popular and I am running out of the tussah silk noil, so it is presently only on etsy, but I plenty of the cream mulberry silk boil.

white sari silk  yellow sari silkAs for silk yarns, I have some new white recycled sari silk hanks, and still have some of the yellow hanks  – I sold out of the green and multicoloured hanks a while ago and am not sure whether to buy any more in – please let me know if you’d like some!  I also have a few cones of various different silks – see etsy for those.

silk-hankiesI recently restocked with the white silk “hankies”, which have been hugely popular, altho’ sometimes customers have not read the full information and think they are buying handkerchiefs – smile – these are literally hemmed squares of unrolled silk cocoons – how they hem them I don’t know – and altho’ I sell them in lots of 15, they are very difficult to count – but even more difficult to weigh – so I usually end up adding more in to make sure you have at least 15 in your bundle.

The SHOW & TELL feature – see last two postings – will run until the end of June, although I am always happy to showcase customers work, and I’d love more of  you to add pictures of your work, or related projects, or even work in progress!  So if you have been feeling shy, please don’t be, and if you keep meaning to take some pictures – please do and send them in – smile!

We are finally having some nice weather, as I predicted, so hope you all make the most of it – who knows how long it will last?

All the best
