SHOW & TELL NO 1: FELT MAKING BY ZOSIA IN S WALES

Standard

This is the first reply I have had to my last blog, asking for club members to send in some pictures of their work – the opportunity is open to all my customers who have bought from me at any time over the years – from either ebay or etsy – to see current stock, please click on the links on the right hand side of this blog.

Zosia says “I’m a felt-maker based in Gwent, Wales. I started felting using the wet and nuno felting techniques about a year and a half ago, and last year me and my friend Helena (who also makes hand-beaded jewellery) started our Facebook page (link below).

https://www.facebook.com/otulinadesign

The first shawl below is based on photos from the Hubble Space Telescope, the second is a colourful design based on an exotic flower design on the silk she used.    Nice work Zosia and thanks for sending it in!

You are welcome to post a comment using the comment link – if its hidden, just go to the end of the tag list – and if you would like to send any photos in – with a brief description of any of your work – please email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com – all submissions will be published on the blog – its not a competition, just a way of sharing your work, whatever it is and however skilled you are – smile!

BRITISH WOOL FROM A BRITISH MILL

Standard

BRITISH WOOL FROM A BRITISH MILL

I have been looking around for a while to see if I could source some new yarns for knitters and weavers, and it’s not as easy as you would think!

At one time there were hundreds of mills preparing wool from British sheep for cloth making, and export – in fact in Shakespeare’s time, wool was the largest export from Britain and made many a fortune!  But things have moved on, and whilst there is now a growing market for wool again (for years farmers have had to sell their fleeces for practically nothing), the mills have slowly disappeared, and the costs of scouring the wool, carding & spinning it, make it very expensive for small producers to supply yarns to crafters.

I have, however, found a commercial mill in the north, who supply garment manufacturers worldwide, and who specialise in British Wool, who are willing to sell me cones from their stock of discontinued colour ranges.

opal

They are not seconds, but simply odds and ends of colours that are no longer on their current catalogue.  The cones are sold by weight, and are around 1Kg each – rather more than most knitters and weavers would normally buy for themselves – and as they are a thin 2 ply (as used by manufacturers), there are over 5,700 metres of yarn on each cone.

They can be knitted or woven as they are, or ‘doubled up’ to give thicker yarns, and as I have chosen for this first trial order, colours that will work together well, you could easily combine the colours when doubling, or trebling the thickness.  If you are weaving with them, all you need to do is check the number of wraps an inch (dpi) round a ruler – if you want to knit with them, then you would need to knit a test piece to check whether you need to make any adjustments to your pattern.

I have got these yarns at a reasonable price, but the price per cone works out at £21.99 per kilo, or more if the cone is heavier, and although this means that you are getting the wool at only £2.20 per 100 gm, I appreciate that not everyone will want to buy several cones at once, especially as they will have to go parcel post, which can add to the cost.

However, if you are part of a knitting group, or spinners & weavers guild, and can arrange to share the cones – this will be a very good deal!

To see the full range, and put an order in, please go to my listing on ebay (click here).

As I said, this is a trial order, and there are lots more colours, and other yarns available, but I wanted to test the idea out first.

Please let me know what you think, even if you are not buying at the moment.

OTHER NEW ITEMS LISTED…..

If you are like me, any natural fibre is better than plastic, and so I have started stocking some JUTE NOT PLASTIC shopping bags, as well as a great storage bag for all kinds of craft items. fold-03 juteb-26_l jutes-03_l

In Wales, we have had to pay for plastic bags at shops and supermarkets for about a year now, so people are turning to buying nice shopping bags again!

The stock photo of the striped storage bags shows it in use for towels & even plants, but they are great for keeping odds & ends of wool, especially when you are working on a project and could become your favourite knitting bag!jutestr-06jutestr-disp1jutestr-empty

Please go to my ebay page or my etsy shop to have a look at these, and all the other craft supplies available.

CALENDAR COMPETITION

Standard

Before I write anything else

I have just spent some time trying to work out how to increase the  font size of this blog, because its too small to read easily.  However the editing panel seems to allow me to do anything BUT increase the font size – EXCEPT BY USING PARAGRAPH STYLES AS ABOVE –  so I suggest you use the view drop down list on your browser to ZOOM IN.  (Is anyone knowledgeable enuf to tell me how to do it?)

Calendar Competition INFO

I had a few thoughts about the Calendar Competition I mentioned in the previous blog – the first one is that,  if you don’t read thro’  the whole blog, you wouldn’t notice it!  And secondly, whilst you might be happy to copy this blog to your friends, its probably easier to ask you for direct referrals on the form below.

So briefly, as I have lost all the email addresses of my previous customers, that I used to send you newsletters, telling you about new stock, special offers and to direct you to more information on this blog.

Ironically, I’m going to have to use the blog to tell people about the competition, but I will be able to compile a partial mailing list of recent customers, as well as going thro my ebay & etsy sales records that are still current enuf to be on the sites, but it will take a few days to do that, so for anyone who reads this blog ………

I need your help!

Could you please fill in the form below if you know anyone who would be interested in receiving my newsletters, and the craft equipment & supplies – for spinners, weavers, felters, knitters, quilters, dressmakers, soap makers, bakers, and other crafts that I cater for.  Current stock is listed on ebay and  etsy,   clicking on the names will take you to the sites.

I thought I’d offer prizes for

the 3 people who refer the most email addresses – but please don’t flood me with junk emails etc – I will check with each of the addressees you give me to make sure they want to be on my mailing list.  As I am trying to rebuild my mailing list, could all past customers who would like to be on it, fill in the form anyway, whether you want to refer your friends or not, and if several people give me the same names, that’s fine – I will still count the number of referrals you give me for the competition!

My customers are worldwide, so please fill in the form wherever you live, and you can refer anyone in any country.

You have my PROMISE, that this mailing list is only for my own use and will never be shared or sold to anyone else.  You can ask to be deleted from the list at any time.

The 3 Prizes

I have two calendars left of a short run I had printed of my own photographs – taken mostly of the Brecon Beacons area in South Wales – sample scans of a few of the pages shown below.

(NB: scans of printed material are always awful!)  You can click on the pictures to enlarge them, and there is a third picture on the previous blog…..I can’t work out how to put the pictures side by side, so I won’t put that one in………you’ll recognise it anyway!

I also have a t-shirt printed with the january snow image – so there are 3 prizes – the first winner can have a choice.  The competition will run until Sunday 10 February, but you can still use the form any time after that to make referrals.

In addition, when you next order, please remind me you filled in the form and I will add a small gift to your order.

FELTED SOAP – A CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA FOR YOU TO MAKE

Standard

It’s even nearer Christmas, and Xmas Trees are now going up – a brief reference to my last post, the special offer about adding some sparkle is still on, so have a look.

If you’d like to try your hand at creating a few really individual gifts that don’t take too long to make, and don’t break the bank, why not have a go at felted soap?

Its really easy, and you can use any soap you like – whether scented or not, commercially made and bought from the supermarket, or handmade – or even a combination of small ends of bars!  You can also get the kids to help and turn it into a play workshop.

Felting soap is also a very practical way to use soap – the felt cover will shrink to fit the soap as it is used, and keeps the soap clean as it absorbs all those sticky bits left after use – as well as adding a soft but slightly exfoliating surface.

You don’t need much wool fibre for each bar, and quite a few of you will have odds and ends that you have been looking to find a use for – all kinds of wool will felt, and you can mix them for this project.

However, if you do want to buy some merino tops to use – please do have a look at my listings on ebay – I  currently have a few auction lots starting at 99p that will end on sunday, (I may add a few more during the next few weeks) as well as plenty of reasonably priced cream merino top     that  you can find here.

As a club member I can offer you a pot luck 50p mix of coloured merino tops to use to decorate your felted soap with.  To claim this special offer, with any purchase you make from my ebay listings, please ask for the ‘pot luck 50p mix‘  before you pay, and I will send you an amended invoice.  All combined purchases you make on ebay are charged at a fixed rate of £2.50 (2nd class) & £3.50 (1st class) for packages that weigh up to 750 gm for UK customers, and I will also keep postage to a mimimum for overseas customers.

I was going to write my own instructions, but a quick search on the web came up with two really excellent links.

The first is a fully illustrated web page with step by step instructions for felting bars of soap, and gives you plenty of ideas – click here to have a look.

The second gives you instructions on how to make decorative felted pebbles of soap – click here for more ideas.

Talking of unusual soaps I also sell picture soaps and solid shampoo on ebay and am about to list a few more – like this frankincence scented dove slice.  2dove soap frank

I also have some very nicely packaged selections of silk and merino fibres that are suitable as gifts that are available on both ebay and my etsy shop.   Click on the names to get to them – you will find different selections of stock on each site.

If you want to put together an order that includes items from both sites, you are welcome to order them direct and I will even give you a discount if you do!  Just email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com.

So happy felting, and don’t get too frazzled before christmas!

All the best

IT’S COMING ON CHRISTMAS, THEY’RE CUTTING DOWN TREES….

Standard

That’s a quote from an old Joni Mitchell song, which has been running thro’ my head in the last couple of days – and you really can’t miss the signs of  preparations for the festive period at the moment – not least the bombardment of pre-xmas emails encouraging you to buy … and I’ve just sent one out too ….. and hopefully you’ll find something among my craft stock that will catch your eye!

Please click on these links to see the full ranges – ebaymy etsy shop

I don’t list everything on both sites, there is some overlap, but there is a different range on each site.   If you want to put together an order that includes items from both sites, you are welcome to order them direct and I will even give you a discount if you do!  Just email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com.

I’ve bought in a job lot of mixed coloured merino tops – suitable for felting and spinning – these are just a couple of them   which I have put on as auction listings on ebay (85solway) – so go and have a look – they’re all starting at 99p – and if you win a few lots,  don’t worry about postage, because I always cap the postage at £2.50 for all packages that weigh up to 750 gms (2nd class UK only), so buy as many items as you want, from any of my listings, and make sure to ask me for a revised invoice so you don’t pay any more.

I also have some fixed price listings for merino & silk fibres.

HAVE  SOME SPARKLE ON ME!

As a special offer for Club members, anyone buying unpackaged fibres – there are also some lovely mixed selections packaged nicely enough to give as gifts–  will get a bit of sparkle to add to the mix – have a look at the listing for trilobal fibre which is a transparent nylon fibre that reflects back the light and gives a sparkle to any  yarn you spin, and can also be added to your felt or incorporated in paper making.  I will add a small amount into you package FREE!  (It goes a very long way!) Please ASK for this by quoting the title of this blog!

I have also put new items up on my etsy shop – if you’re getting into baking for xmas, there’s a range of silicone bakeware, including really great oven gloves and silicone baking mats, chocolate moulds etc.  The cake moulds can also be used for making soap.

I’ve also added a new “About Julz” page so you know who you are buying from, and the Club Notice Board is available for any notices you want to put up, including adverts for xmas  fayres, or things you want to sell.

LAST POSTING DATES FOR XMAS – please keep in mind these are the dates that Royal Mail say they can guarantee that items will arrive before Xmas – there’s usually a bit of lee-way in them, and if you do order late, I will do my best to get stuff out quickly, as long as you pay 1st class postage.  If you are sending items on as Xmas presents, then please allow the corresponding extra time.

UK DATES:

2nd class & Recorded Delivery – Tues 18 December

1st class & Recorded Delivery – Thurs 20 December

Last Date for Special Delivery – Sat 22 December

Parcels – Thurs  13 December

Airmail to Africa, Carribbean, Central & S America, Middle East – Fri 7 December

I can also offer overseas customers a special service.  If you are buying a present for someone in the UK I will happily send it direct to their UK address, giving you the added advantage of only paying UK postage, and knowing it will get there more quickly than if you have to send it yourself.  I will also add a note in the package to say who its from and of course will not enclose the invoice!

I look forward to taking your orders – smile!

Don’t get too frazzled or overspend this year – just enjoy yourself!

My LAST POSTING DAY for current listings will be WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER, so if you were planning on buying something particular,  please order it in the next week, or keep an eye out for newsletters & blog updates.

You are welcome to drop me an email, or leave a comment below, if you want to reserve any particular items you have seen on my listings – I will be taking most of them down before I go into hospital…..the above dates assume the op isn’t delayed or cancelled.  I will also be planning what stock to buy in for the Xmas period and any requests would be helpful.

Oh yes, and I have finally got around to photographing the Berber wool, which is now listed on my ebay page (85solway).

Please also feel free to use the CLUB NOTICEBOARD which is looking very empty, altho I have to approve messages before they get published, I am quite happy for you to talk among yourselves – smile.
