decorated fantasia spinning wheel

I just got an ‘annual report’ from wordpress on this site, and the most visited pages are the SHOW & TELL FEATURES – especially the one on decorating KROMSKI’S FANTASIA SPINNING WHEEL. Click here to see it.

I love the idea that something posted over a year ago is still getting visitors and inspiring others.  There are several other SHOW & TELL posts – to access them, please see my new SHOW & TELL ARCHIVE PAGE.

I have constantly asked my customers to contribute to this feature, but somehow they are either too shy, or too busy,or feel its too much work!  Please don’t  let that put you off!  I will publish all contributions, whether you are just starting up or a professional – tho’ I reserve the right to edit your contribution slightly – and will give you a chance to publicise your work and for others to contact you if you want them to.

There is no time limit on this – just send me something any time you feel like to julz@julzweaving.plus.com, OR fill in the form on the CONTACT ME PAGE Please include as many pictures as you want, with some brief paragraphs about yourself and your work. Whist this opportunity is specifically for my customers, past or present – and future – I would also be interested to hear from people who just have something they’d like to share, and if its relevant in any way, I will put your contribution up too.

If you’d like to look at my current stock, please see the right hand column, underneath my photo, where the personal links list all the sites I sell on –  clicking on these links will give you a chance to browse. I am also aware that you may not currently be registered with any or all of these sites, and to make it easy for you to order at any time, and especially when you want to order various items spread across the sites, you are welcome to put in an order direct.  Please have a look at the BUYING DIRECT PAGE at the top of this blog.

HAPPY NEW YEAR – Hope to hear from you soon!

ROYAL MAIL – they REALLY don’t know what they are doing ……see previous 2 posts to make sense of this one!

Standard

I finally got around to popping into the area Sorting Office, because I also went to the Library yesterday.  (Our local library closed earlier this year – another of the cuts forced on us unwillingly)

After my phone call to the office on 6 December, I had meant to phone back for more information, but I got busy that week, and didn’t have a great deal of faith that I’d get any answers.  I also hoped that I’d catch my local postie and ask what was happening – AND that Royal Mail “customers services” would reply with more than repeated requests for the post box number – no update on that conversation is yet available!

So I was in the area, and felt I really should make the effort.  Glad I did.  The guy on duty told me why they didn’t know anything about the change in the collection times, because ……

THEY HADN’T BEEN TOLD!

Nor had they been the ones that changed the notices on the post boxes, he only found out about it when he was on his rounds,  and met the guy from Merthyr Tydfil who was touring the post boxes on the instructions of Head Office.  (I forgot to ask him how many boxes in what areas were involved – but he was busy and people were coming in to collect parcels.)

EVEN MORE INTERESTING …..

was the fact that having put up the notices, apparently Head Office changed their minds and realised that Christmas was on the way, and that any disruption to collections might affect the public – so in fact, normal collections are continuing.

Which explains why, when I was in the pet shop the other day, watching people blithely posting their letters without a glance at the 7am last collection notice, the guy who runs the shop told me that in fact he’d seen collections at all times of the day, including the old 5pm van collection.  (See the picture in the 6 December blog of the notice on this box)

UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME …..

I believed what I saw on my local box, and if I’d known that I DIDN’T NEED TO  believe what the notice said,  I would have posted my letters there, with the stamps on, got my paper and gone home.  Until yesterday, I still believed what the notices said, so have avoided posting anything in my local box, and told many of my neighbours not to post anything there either, as their letters would be delayed.

HOWEVER – BEGINNING IN JANUARY  THESE CHANGES WILL APPLY……

And no doubt unless someone from Head Office reads this blog, no one will either apologise for putting up the notices early, or think that maybe it would be a good idea to put a sticker on the boxes affected to alert people to the changes.

The reason the changes are being made is – wait for it – you really couldn’t guess, could you –

TO SAVE MONEY…..

Apparently they are cutting the hours and the less hours –  the less pay ……so the idea is that Post Boxes with low volumes are to be collected by the local postie during their delivery round, and so the last collection times from those boxes will be early in the morning.

Post Boxes with larger volumes will still be collected later in the day by the usual van,  which will actually pass by these low volume boxes on their round, but miss them out!  A great saving of time and petrol eh!

And what do you bet, that by the time this scheme has been running for a while, almost no one will post any letters in the low volume post boxes, so Royal Mail will have a perfect excuse …….

for getting rid of hundreds of Post Boxes!

If any ROYAL MAIL SHAREHOLDERS are reading this, this is the kind of privatisation you invested in – do you agree with it?  Are you happy to take your dividends and watch our beloved national service be decimated by an ineffective private management, who goes whinging to the government that they can’t cope with competition,  and will need more money to keep the service going, whilst making sneaky cuts, and not telling anyone about them?

I will, from now on, post most items 1st class, unless it just won’t work that way – ie: some parcels won’t go for £3.50, and unless you particularly want to pay the extra postage, they will have to go 2nd class, or via Hermes, which I recently discovered has a drop off point in the local CostCutter supermarket!

Please let me know, when ordering, if you want to pay the extra, and I’ll amend your invoice.

I’m not including the extra expensive last minute services, which give you a few extra days, because I don’t want to have to rush to the post office every day with rush orders – smile!

I am also happy to post the item direct to the person you are buying for – worldwide – just let me know their address when you order, and I’ll let you know what the extra postage is.  You can email me direct at julz@julzweaving.plus.com

The cards I found after my excavations – see previous post!

Standard

set of 4 xmas cards

After more excavations in the stock room, I had to give up, because it would have entailed pulling out so much stuff to get to the other boxes, that I just didn’t have the energy!  However, I did find a box of mixed cards that I used to take with me to craft fairs etc – so this is the set I chose to sell as Xmas Cards.

They are not obvious Xmas cards, but I used to use them to send out to people at xmas, and people really liked an alternative to the usual Merry Christmas emblazoned type cards, and, besides which they often framed them afterwards – smile.

My best seller was the log fire card – bottom right, and as I don’t have quite as many of those as I do the others, I thought I’d offer them as a set, but not promise 5 of each card.

You may notice that ‘fireside’ is similar to the red teapot card – that’s because they are two crops taken from one large format negative – they were taken old style, on film.  I took a whole roll of the still life set up I created around my living room fireplace – and for some reason, on some of them, the film slipped slightly, and I got double exposures – which I liked better than the original sharp photograph – so I chose that one to print!

I originally printed the whole image as an 8 x 6″ postcard – which is also still available – and only later, when I was choosing images to print as greetings cards did it occur to me to split the image.

I am selling the 4 cards above as a set of 20 for £6 – that’s 30p a card, and is definately less than it cost me to produce them!

While I was at it, I decided to offer a set of 10 randomly selected cards from the rest of the range for £3 – also 30p each. These are some of the cards available in that set – the only reason I haven’t included all of them is that I couldn’t find a grid template big enuf to take the rest of them! 9 of my other cards

All the cards are 5″ square, blank inside and printed on really good card, with nice, good quality coloured envelopes.

The reason I have put them up here is that the cards do not show up large enough in the email I sent out to my customers on Saturday, so I thought I’d direct them here so they could see them properly.

However, having done so – if anyone else would like to buy any – please get in touch  – julz@julzweaving.plus.com

You can pay with paypal, which makes things easier.

“Enuf Already” of the sales pitch!  I would be interested in any comments, positive OR negative about the cards – feedback is always useful.

SHOW & TELL NO 3: SPINNING BY ROSEMARY FROM PRESCOT, MERSEYSIDE

Standard

ROSEMARY not only spins at home, but is part of a Tudor re-enactment group – which I found out about by chance when she sent me a message thro’ ebay, asking for fast delivery, so that she could use them in her display last weekend.

“By the way the amber and carders will be used next weekend when we are doing some spinning etc. demos in Elizabethan dress. I put the amber inside replica pomanders (pomander actually means in French an apple of amber).”

“As promised here I am in two different guises spinning and using your tops. In fact can you see the necklace have on when I am an Elizabethan that’s a pomander and it is full of your amber.”

Thanks very much Rosemary for sending the photos so quickly – the Elizabethan costume looks very comfortable!  Feel free to leave a comment for Rosemary in the comment box (at the end of the blog)

You can find the amber resin she mentions HERE on ebay, or HERE for etsy customers – you can use it as a solid perfume to rub on your wrists, or put it a pomander as Rosemary has. It is a totally natural product and has a warm exotic fragrance.  If you look through my other listings on these sites, you will find merino wool tops for spinning as well as other related items.

SHOW & TELL NO 2: DECORATED KROMSKI FANTASIA SPINNING WHEEL BY CHRISTINE FROM TOTNES DEVON

CHRISTINE, from Totnes, Devon bought a KROMSKI FANTASIA SPINNING WHEEL from me last year, and was inspired by my suggestion, and the picture on the listing, that because of the way the wheel is made, there is a great opportunity to decorate it and make it totally individual.

She sent me these pictures earlier this year, and is happy for them to be part of this SHOW & TELL!

spinning wheel 2   spinning wheel  spinning wheel 3sock yarn

THIS IS HOW SHE ACCOMPLISHED THESE EFFECTS: “I finished the wood parts with danish oil and the MDF wheel was primed with white emulsion, after masking the cross piece with newspaper and masking tape. I then sprayed it with black matt car paint.  The front lettering is  traditional, bygone west country sheep counting language, much like the well known Cumbrian one which goes yan, tan, thether etc. On the back I drew little white leaping sheep, both using Eddings paint marker pens. Finished off with a couple of layers of varnish. I have also included a picture of the first yarn I spun on it, a sock yarn, spun from a hand painted superwash merino blend roving.”

I was really impressed when I saw what she’d done, and was going to put the pictures up at the time – but then I thought I’d lost them, as I hadn’t saved them separately – just as well I went back & checked!

Please do leave any comments for Christine at the end of this blog!

out of the boxThis is what the FANTASIA looks like when it comes out of the box – it doesn’t take too long to put it together, but whist its still in pieces, it makes it easier to decorate the various pieces in any way you want to – its only a suggestion, if you don’t want to bother, this is what it looks like…  fantasia unfinished

If you are interested in buying one yourself, have a look at the US distributers website – http://www.newvoyager.com – where you will find lots of useful information, as well as a picture of another decorated Fantasia.
