Make Your Own Silk Paper – The Ironing Method

Standard

DSCF1868Its actually very easy to make paper out of silk, and you can get some beautiful results very quickly if you use the Ironing Method.

I tried out a few variations, and made a few mistakes, and I would suggest that you work on the trial and error method too, and work out what you prefer.

There are various uses for this handmade silk paper, and you can make is as thin or thick as you like.  Thick paper can be used for book covers and even writing paper, and can be painted or embellished and embroidered after its dry, and cut to any size you want.

The thin paper is great to add to any art textile design piece, and is especially dramatic as a window within a greetings card.   You can also make beads by rolling strips of the paper and varnishing them – so I hope this gives you some ideas for xmas gifts!

You will need:

IMG_2605silk cocoon strippings (unwashed and still containing the natural gum, that the silkworms used to make the cocoons, which is what makes this method possible)

and/or

throwsters wastesilk throwsters waste (again unwashed – this comes in white or various colours)

silk hankies

matawa silk hankies (these are unwrapped cocoons spread out into hemmed squares – see my post on silk worms)

other odds and ends to add in when you are making the paper, such as bits of silk carrier rods, cut silk fibres, pieces of silk lap, washed throwsters waste, glitter, small beads or anything else that takes your fancy!

an iron and board or table

non stick greaseproof baking paper – must be non stick otherwise you won’t be able to peel the paper off

small spray bottle filled with ordinary water

A4 pack with everything you need - £9.99

A4 pack with everything you need – £9.99

I have put together a pack with the basics for you…depending of what size you make, it should be enough for 5- 10 pieces.

You can either buy this direct – see here – or you can find the listings for it on etsy – here, and on ebay – here.A6 silk sample pack_Fotor

Instructions:

DSCF1844Cut two pieces of the baking paper and lay one on your ironing surface, then pull out strands of the silk cocoon strippings and lay in a thin rough circle or square on top of the baking paper.

DSCF1847Then spray with water and place the other sheet of baking paper on top and iron the sandwich.

DSCF1845Lift the top paper and add some more silk strippings, and repeat as above.  You can continue this process until you get the thickness you want – or you can …..

DSCF1866….. add one thin silk hankie on top of the ironed silk, then another thin layer of the silk strippings, spray and iron.  The silk hankie does not contain gum so you need to add the strippings to fuse them.

DSCF1868

The idea of using the silk hankie is to give a thin net that will allow you to keep some gaps in the finished paper.  Lift the piece up and see if you want to add some more silk strippings.  The paper will still be wet so work carefully.

DSCF1873

Once you are happy with the piece of paper you have made, pull it off the bottom baking sheet and allow to dry.  You will find you have made a very thin sheet of stable paper.  The edges of the hankie will need to be cut off, as they will probably not have been stabilised.

Please note, when experimenting, you need to balance the thicknesses on each side of the hankie, and if you decide to add another one, you can.  Silk hankies can be dyed before you use them and will add some lovely colours to your paper.

DSCF1854You don’t need to use the silk hankies – this is another version where I tried adding some white silk throwsters waste, a little washed dyed silk throwsters waste and some coloured glitter.

DSCF1860I wasn’t sure I liked it all that much, but its just to give you some ideas.

DSCF1878

This is the finished dried piece.  Its a lot thicker than the first piece, and you need to fill all the gaps before you dry it!

If you would like to share your pictures of the paper you make, I will be happy to put them up on another post so that others can see them and get inspiration!  Please email them to me referencing “the ironing method’.  If you don’t have my email address, please use the CONTACT ME page.

MERRY XMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Standard

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CUSTOM DURING 2012
HOPE TO SEE YOU IN 2013

MERRY XMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Just to let you know the last posting date for 1st class mail to the UK is Thursday 20 December – and anything now posted 2nd class or to international destinations  is unlikely to reach you before Christmas. (I have been sending items 1st class for you for the last couple of days, even if you paid for 2nd class postage.)

You can still order anything from my listings on ebay & etsy (link below as the edit on this page is not letting me add it here!), and I will post small items during the holidays, but anything special will be safer sent after the New Year Holiday, from 2 January, as there is likely to be a backlog in all postal systems.  If you have bought something and it hasn’t arrived yet, please be patient, especially if it has been sent overseas.

I will be adding new stock during January, as well as putting some items up at reduced prices, in a mini January Sale.  If you have any suggestions for items you would like me to stock, please let me know!

Have a good holiday – relax, enjoy and don’t overspend – smile!

FELTED SOAP – A CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA FOR YOU TO MAKE

Standard

It’s even nearer Christmas, and Xmas Trees are now going up – a brief reference to my last post, the special offer about adding some sparkle is still on, so have a look.

If you’d like to try your hand at creating a few really individual gifts that don’t take too long to make, and don’t break the bank, why not have a go at felted soap?

Its really easy, and you can use any soap you like – whether scented or not, commercially made and bought from the supermarket, or handmade – or even a combination of small ends of bars!  You can also get the kids to help and turn it into a play workshop.

Felting soap is also a very practical way to use soap – the felt cover will shrink to fit the soap as it is used, and keeps the soap clean as it absorbs all those sticky bits left after use – as well as adding a soft but slightly exfoliating surface.

You don’t need much wool fibre for each bar, and quite a few of you will have odds and ends that you have been looking to find a use for – all kinds of wool will felt, and you can mix them for this project.

However, if you do want to buy some merino tops to use – please do have a look at my listings on ebay – I  currently have a few auction lots starting at 99p that will end on sunday, (I may add a few more during the next few weeks) as well as plenty of reasonably priced cream merino top     that  you can find here.

As a club member I can offer you a pot luck 50p mix of coloured merino tops to use to decorate your felted soap with.  To claim this special offer, with any purchase you make from my ebay listings, please ask for the ‘pot luck 50p mix‘  before you pay, and I will send you an amended invoice.  All combined purchases you make on ebay are charged at a fixed rate of £2.50 (2nd class) & £3.50 (1st class) for packages that weigh up to 750 gm for UK customers, and I will also keep postage to a mimimum for overseas customers.

I was going to write my own instructions, but a quick search on the web came up with two really excellent links.

The first is a fully illustrated web page with step by step instructions for felting bars of soap, and gives you plenty of ideas – click here to have a look.

The second gives you instructions on how to make decorative felted pebbles of soap – click here for more ideas.

Talking of unusual soaps I also sell picture soaps and solid shampoo on ebay and am about to list a few more – like this frankincence scented dove slice.  2dove soap frank

I also have some very nicely packaged selections of silk and merino fibres that are suitable as gifts that are available on both ebay and my etsy shop.   Click on the names to get to them – you will find different selections of stock on each site.

If you want to put together an order that includes items from both sites, you are welcome to order them direct and I will even give you a discount if you do!  Just email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com.

So happy felting, and don’t get too frazzled before christmas!

All the best

IT’S COMING ON CHRISTMAS, THEY’RE CUTTING DOWN TREES….

Standard

That’s a quote from an old Joni Mitchell song, which has been running thro’ my head in the last couple of days – and you really can’t miss the signs of  preparations for the festive period at the moment – not least the bombardment of pre-xmas emails encouraging you to buy … and I’ve just sent one out too ….. and hopefully you’ll find something among my craft stock that will catch your eye!

Please click on these links to see the full ranges – ebaymy etsy shop

I don’t list everything on both sites, there is some overlap, but there is a different range on each site.   If you want to put together an order that includes items from both sites, you are welcome to order them direct and I will even give you a discount if you do!  Just email me at julz@julzweaving.plus.com.

I’ve bought in a job lot of mixed coloured merino tops – suitable for felting and spinning – these are just a couple of them   which I have put on as auction listings on ebay (85solway) – so go and have a look – they’re all starting at 99p – and if you win a few lots,  don’t worry about postage, because I always cap the postage at £2.50 for all packages that weigh up to 750 gms (2nd class UK only), so buy as many items as you want, from any of my listings, and make sure to ask me for a revised invoice so you don’t pay any more.

I also have some fixed price listings for merino & silk fibres.

HAVE  SOME SPARKLE ON ME!

As a special offer for Club members, anyone buying unpackaged fibres – there are also some lovely mixed selections packaged nicely enough to give as gifts–  will get a bit of sparkle to add to the mix – have a look at the listing for trilobal fibre which is a transparent nylon fibre that reflects back the light and gives a sparkle to any  yarn you spin, and can also be added to your felt or incorporated in paper making.  I will add a small amount into you package FREE!  (It goes a very long way!) Please ASK for this by quoting the title of this blog!

I have also put new items up on my etsy shop – if you’re getting into baking for xmas, there’s a range of silicone bakeware, including really great oven gloves and silicone baking mats, chocolate moulds etc.  The cake moulds can also be used for making soap.

I’ve also added a new “About Julz” page so you know who you are buying from, and the Club Notice Board is available for any notices you want to put up, including adverts for xmas  fayres, or things you want to sell.

LAST POSTING DATES FOR XMAS – please keep in mind these are the dates that Royal Mail say they can guarantee that items will arrive before Xmas – there’s usually a bit of lee-way in them, and if you do order late, I will do my best to get stuff out quickly, as long as you pay 1st class postage.  If you are sending items on as Xmas presents, then please allow the corresponding extra time.

UK DATES:

2nd class & Recorded Delivery – Tues 18 December

1st class & Recorded Delivery – Thurs 20 December

Last Date for Special Delivery – Sat 22 December

Parcels – Thurs  13 December

INTERNATIONAL DATES:

Airmail to Africa, Carribbean, Central & S America, Middle East – Fri 7 December

I can also offer overseas customers a special service.  If you are buying a present for someone in the UK I will happily send it direct to their UK address, giving you the added advantage of only paying UK postage, and knowing it will get there more quickly than if you have to send it yourself.  I will also add a note in the package to say who its from and of course will not enclose the invoice!

I look forward to taking your orders – smile!

Don’t get too frazzled or overspend this year – just enjoy yourself!

all the best

Oh yes, and I have finally got around to photographing the Berber wool, which is now listed on my ebay page (85solway).

Please also feel free to use the CLUB NOTICEBOARD which is looking very empty, altho I have to approve messages before they get published, I am quite happy for you to talk among yourselves – smile.
